Kölner Dom / Cologne cathedral. Entwurf für einen Wasserspeier / Design of a gargoyle

Under the roof of Cologne’s cathedral there are workshops and some storage rooms. In one of the compartments the cathedral works store old plaster models from the 19th century. After these templates the stone cutters produced the final sculptures which grace the cathedral. (Many of them replaced weathered and broken pieces from the Middle Ages).
In December 2014 we had the opportunity to explore all this when we were guided over the roofs and through the attic storeys of the wonderful cathedral. The oldest parts of this world famous building are from 1248 but the huge church was not finished before 1880. The site is a place of worship for ca. 1.700 years now because the Romans built the first temple in this very place.
