The “Dragon of Ignorance,” by Hildreth Meière, the only surviving part of her scale model for a huge metal relief on the facade of the Medicine And Public Health Building at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. It is now on show in “Walls Speak: The Narrative Art of Hildreth Meière,” at the National Building Museum in Washington. Meière was one of the great decorative artists of the earlier 20th century, adding Art Deco dazzle to the insides of banks, churches and pavilions – and to the facade of Radio City Music Hall. She was also the ultimate collaborator, working as a middleman between architects and craftspeople so as to assemble a perfectly decorated whole that served a building’s narratives and needs. Of course, that meant she got less fame and credit than maybe was her due.
