My 800th Flickr upload!

I believe this is a female Striped Horsefly (Tabanus lineola). Spotted in the Parc-nature de la Pointe-aux-Prairies, in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Reversed Pentax-M 28-50mm F/3.5-4.5 lens on 48mm of extension tubes, with diffused off-camera Yongnuo YN-560 III flash. I think the zoom here was around 40mm. Three-shot handheld focus stack.

UPDATE: Scout is now (August 5th) telling me this was Explored for August 3rd at #102 – very high! – but I saw no abnormal activity yesterday (the 4th) and only today am I seeing a (small) spike in views… Looks like this shot was exlored "a day late", so to speak – odd. I’ll take it, though. 🙂

HMS WESTMINSTER TESTS HER ARSENAL OF WEAPONRY

Whilst on maritime security patrols in the Indian Ocean, HMS Wesminster organised an afternoon of gunery serials utilising all her medium and close range weaponry. Starting Off with the 4.5" Gun used in Naval Gun Support (NGS), the ship honed in on a target comprising a large inflatable ‘killer tomato’. After accurately hitting the target, the Ship tracked in and attacked with her 30mm automatic guns. The serial finished off with a ‘Quickdraw’ exercise using the Ship’s response force to finsih off the target with the Minigun and British made General Purpose Machine Gun.
HMS Westminster is currently employed in maritime security in the Indian Ocean and is due to return to the UK in February 2014.
