Collaborative Futures 2nd Edition Book Sprint

In January 2010 six authors and one programmer were locked in a room in Berlin and were assigned by the Transmediale festival to collaboratively write a book titled "Collaborative Futures".
5 days and 33,000 words later the first incarnation of Collaborative Futures was finished online, and sent off to be printed. 5 months later the original authors together with three new people and will be locked in Berlin and New York to produce the second edition of the same book.
They will be joined by additional guests and contributors who will drop in or contribute remotely on the Booki.cc website.
* We will meet every morning at 9:30am and will write until the sun or our minds sets (the later of the two).
* We will use the Booki.cc online software to write, edit and collaborate.
* We will edit the existing work, possibly even replacing full chapters.
* We will write new chapters to extend, complement and possibly contradict the existing ones.
* We will eat and drink in the space and will have dinners together on the three days.
* We will argue and fight against each other and against the paradigms of this collaborative effort and its tendency to subsume our conflicting voices.
* We will produce the 2nd edition of the Collaborative Futures book by the evening of Friday, June 25th.

Red 5 Studios’ SOPA protest

Protect IP and legislation like the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) will harm gamers and game makers in many ways, including:
Inhibit free speech and place broad powers to control the internet in the hands of corporations and the government.
Stopping the free flow of user generated content in games.
Potentially shutting down the streaming of videogames and e-Sports.
Having a chilling effect on new companies and new game ideas.
Be sure to contact your representatives in Congress and the Senate to let them know how you feel about these proposals. You can easily send a letter with your complaint via the Electronic Frontier Foundation website
We decided to do our part. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a group that was designed to support game developers, chooses to support both PIPA and SOPA even against the wishes of their own members. With our own lobbyists working against us, we needed an alternative voice for developers and gamers in Washington. Thus League For Gamers (LFG) is born.
LFG will remain open as a beacon for gamers who would like to join a new voice for opposing SOPA, PIPA, and similar legislation now, and in the future. Please join us and sign the petition against the ESA at www.leagueforgamers.org/

Preocupados con actualizarnos constantemente, con obtener el último modelo de quién sabe qué, con lucir la insignia del consumidor moderno, informado, a la última.
Minados por ubicuos mensajes que insisten en recordarnos que siempre hay algo mejor, que lo que tenemos nunca es ni será suficiente, es y está destinado a ser antiguo, de la temporada pasada o lo que es lo mismo pero no igual, de hace siglos, que en consumo equivale a una era.
¿Y si decidimos no estarlo?
¿Y si decidiéramos no correr en pos del futuro hecho gadget, vehículo todoterreno o camisa a la moda?
Entonces es cuando descubrimos que estamos obligados. Que lo que parecía una opción no es más que una forma de enmascarar que los propios objetos nos fuerzan a desecharlos.
-Tienen voz propia y ejercen sus mandatos.
El sistema operativo ya no es compatible con el software que necesitamos instalar, el portátil ya no tiene la entrada que requiere el nuevo periférico, la mesa de Ikea no resistió la mudanza, la suela del zapato de la primavera pasada ya se ha despegado.
Todo ello concienzudamente programado para mantener un sistema que nos mantiene a su vez a nosotros. Para mantener nuestro trabajo, para mantener el trabajo de los que mantienen nuestro trabajo, para no romper un ciclo de compra-eliminación-compra más allá del cual produce -hmm… vaya término- pánico mirar.
Y mientras nos preparamos, una vez más, para actualizarnos, llenamos el contenedor de la basura con recursos malgastados. Desechamos trabajo de otros: trabajo diseñado para ser desechado. Objetos con fecha de expiración programada que cumplen sin errores ni retrasos su única función: asegurarse de que recordemos efectuar la siguiente compra.
¿Es ésta la única forma de alimentar el ciclo?
¿Hasta cuándo podrán los recursos soportar una carrera sin meta/s?
¿Esperaremos hasta entonces para imaginar alternativas?

Concerned with being constantly updated, with obtaining the latest model of who knows what, with wearing the badge of the modern, informed, up-to-date consumer.
Undermined by ubiquitous messages that insist in reminding us that there’s always something better, that what we have is nor will never be enough, is bound to be old, of the last season or, which is the same but not, of centuries ago, which in consumption is equal to an era.
What if we decide not to be?
What if we decide not to run in pursuit of a future made into a gadget, a SUV or a trendy shirt?
It’s then that we realise we’re forced. That was seemed an option is nothing but a way to mask the fact that the objects themselves force us to discard them.
-They have a voice of their own and take command.
The operating system is no longer compatible with the software we need to install, the laptop does not have the required input for the new peripheral, the Ikea table didn’t resist the move, the soles of the shoes we bought last spring have come apart.
All of this thoroughly programmed to support a system that in turn supports us. To keep a job, to support the job of those who support ours, to not break a cycle of purchase-disposal-purchase beyond which we panic just to look.
And while we once again prepare to update, we fill up the trash bin with wasted resources. We dispose of the work of others: work designed to be thrown away. Objects with a programmed expiration date, which serve their only function without errors or delays: to make sure we remember to make our next purchase.
Is this the only way to keep the cycle?
How long will resources be able to support a race without (a) finishing line(s)?
Will we wait until then to imagine alternatives?

Soucieux d’être constamment à jour, de détenir les derniers modèles de qui sait quoi, de porter le badge de la modernité, d’être éclairé, d’être un consommateur dans le vent.
Miné par des messages omniprésents qui nous rappellent insistants qu’il y a toujours quelque chose de mieux que ce que nous avons, que ce ne sera jamais assez, ou que ce sera bientôt dépassé, daté de la dernière saison, ou ce qui est la même chose, quoique, daté du siècle dernier, ce qui en terme consumériste vaut une ère.
Et si nous décidions de ne pas en être ?
Et si nous décidions de ne pas poursuivre un avenir de gadgets, un SUV ou une chemise tendance ?
C’est alors que nous réalisons que nous sommes contraints ; que ce qui nous est offert comme des options n’est qu’une manière de masquer que les objets eux-mêmes nous forcent à les jeter.
Ils ont leur propre voix et prennent les commandes.
Le système d’exploitation n’est plus compatible avec le logiciel que nous voulons installer, le portable n’a pas les entrées nécessaires pour le nouveau périphérique, la table IKEA n’a pas résisté au déménagement, les semelles des chaussures que nous avons acheté au printemps dernier ont rendu l’âme.
Tout cela soigneusement programmé pour soutenir un système qui à son tour nous soutient. Garder un emploi, soutenir l’emploi de ceux qui soutiennent le nôtre, ne pas interrompre le cycle achat-rebus-achat sans lequel nous paniquons rien que d’y penser.
Et tandis que nous préparons notre nouvelle mise à jour, nous remplissons nos poubelles du gaspillage de nos ressources. Nous disposons de l’œuvre des autres: travaux conçus pour être jeté.Les objets à date d’expiration programmée remplissent leurs rôles sans erreur ni retard: s’assurentque nous nous rappelons de faire de notre prochain achat.
Est-ce la seule façon de maintenir le cycle ?
Combien de temps encore les ressources soutiendront-elles une course sans ligne d’arrivée ?
Jusqu’où attendrons-nous pour imaginer des alternatives ?
